Located atop Richmond Hill on Shaker ridge, and nestled among forested trails and cleared pastures of native grasses and wildflowers, our house provides all the modern comforts you might want while providing a natural setting that is landscaped and yet still wild.

You will approach the home via a private drive that takes you through a half-acre of woods into a clearing atop the hill. Rows of yew hedges and rhododendrons welcome you into the grounds as your first glimpses of the mountains come into view just beyond the lawn and fields cascading down from the wrap around porch. The first thing you might notice is the crisp clean air of the Berkshires and the scent of trees, as well as the cooler summer temperatures.

As you enter the house, you will immediately take note of the architecture. Designed in a mid-century modern style with influences from Japanese traditional housebuilding, the matrix of exposed beams visible below the 3-story cathedral ceiling is like not other house in the area. It provides a sense of the grand scale of the surrounding mountains, while the oak woodwork creates a warmth that feels homey. Sliding doors in every room room give picturesque views while also providing access points to the porches and grounds that draw nature into the house. The first floor is punctuated by the 3 story field stone fireplace in the living room that anchors the house.

The ground floor layout includes the aforementioned entry way beyond which is an open layout containing the living living room and dining room. Off the living room through sliding pocket doors is a library / den with sofa, chairs, desk and 55” TV with a Bose surround sound speaker system. Opposite the den the other side of the living room is a set of double doors leading to the family room and kitchen.

Living room amenities include a sectional sofa, coffee table cozy berber carpets, built-in book shelves, fireplace, stereo system with Bose speakers, additional lounge chairs and a baby grand piano. Views face south toward the Berkshire and Taconic ranges.

Dining room amenities include a round 6-person Saarinen table with tulip chairs and built-in hutch.

Family room amenities include a 4 person sofa, three additional lounge chairs, 3 Moroccan Poufs, a wood stove, built-in shelves containing a large record collection of all genres, a stereo, turntable, 4-person dining counter, and an 8-person dining table.

Kitchen amenities include two vertically stacked ovens (including convection), a massive Sub-zero refrigerator, large marble-top island with electric glass range and all the other typical applianced you would find in a kitchen (dishwasher, double-basin sink, microwave, toaster oven, coffee/espresso machine, and more). The kitchen has an alcoved picture window looking out toward an herb garden and screened gazebo beyond which is woods connecting our property to the neighboring apple orchard 25 minutes away by wooded trail.

The laundry room is located off the kitchen and includes large ASKO washer and dryer and a sink.

There is also a half bathroom on the ground floor located off the entry way.

From the living room, a staircase leads to the upper bedrooms of which there are three in the main house. The first bedroom faces south and has sliding doors to an outside roof deck facing the mountain view. It has a large walk-in closet. This room as a Queen bed. Next to this bedroom, there is an unattached full bathroom with tub shower, toilet and sink. The hallway connecting this bedroom to the other two on this level is open to the living spaces below on one side. The second bedroom faces north toward the woods and has sky lights, a vanity sink, book shelves and a large closet. This room has a Queen bed. The third bedroom is the Master Suite at the end of the hall. Open the door and step into a huge suite that spans the north-south axis of the house. On the south side is a King bed facing the sliding glass doors leading to a private roof deck. The room has a sitting chair, a fireplace, built-in book shelves, a stereo and 2-story cathedral ceiling with exposed beams. To the north side of the Master Suite is a Bathroom and Walk-in closet. The Bathroom has twin marble sinks, a shower, a separate jacuzzi tub, and through a sliding pocket door for privacy a toilet and bidet. The walk-in closet has built-in shelving and bars on three walls and is approximately 10’ x 10’.

Completing the interior of the main house is a basement which contains all the mechanicals for the house, but also has a ping pong table. While not finished, it’s well lit and large — at one time housing a model train installation.

Attached to the main house through an interior glass corridor is a 4 bedroom, 3 bathroom 3-story guest house. On the ground floor of the guest house is a three car garage accessible through a door at the end of another hallway. All the bedrooms and bathrooms of the guest house are located on the second floor. Coming up a flight of stairs from the breezeway you will land in a hallway which has two bedrooms on either side. On the south side of the hall, there is a full bathroom with a sink, toilet, shower stall and separate tub under a skylight. Next to that is a bedroom / office with a desk, full size futon sofa and a twin daybed built-in. This room has skylight, dresser and closet. Next is a cedar linen closet, Adjacent to the closet is the second guest bedroom which has two twin beds, a built-in twin daybed, sky lights, and a small loft space accessible by ladder (there’s no mattress in the loft, but we’ve put camping mats up there in the past). On the north side of the hall opposite bedroom 2 is a third bedroom with windows on two sides overlooking the driveway and a sky light with a full size built-in day bead. This room also has a full size bed and a twin bed. Additionally, there is an attached private bathroom with shower stall, separate tub with shower head, sink and private toilet room with a door separating it from the rest of the bathroom. Skylights in here as well. The fourth bedroom in the guest house has a Queen bed and two large walk-in closets. Facing the woods, it occasionally has views of an owl that sits in the tree outside the window. For this reason, it has become the “owl room.” There is also an attached full bathroom, though this bathroom has a second door that connects it to the main hallway as well. The final feature of the guest house is a spiral stair leading to an open span carpeted third floor loft that is a kid’s dream play area.

If you’re still reading, you’ve finally made it to the best part: the grounds. We know you aren’t coming to the Berkshires to be inside a house! The property is 22 acres in total, though it connects to undeveloped woods that stretch for miles and miles and have trails running throughout. The immediate area around the house is landscaped, including three separate “lawns” that are great for playtime. South of the house is a beautifully kept green grass lawn that is perfect for games (whiffleball, football, corn hole, croquet, etc.). Beyond that there is a field that we keep wild, but has some walking paths mowed through it. Next to the lawn is a 20’ x 40’ in-ground pool surrounded by a picket fence and a wooden deck with 2 Adirondack recliners shaded by a large Sunbrella, and a 5-6 person round lunch table with it’s own Sunbrella. There’s a pool house for changing and storing pool toys. The pool goes from 3’ deep to 8’ in the deep end. Heading back to the wrap around porch of the house, there are teak wooden rocking chairs (padded) and side tables looking out toward the field and the mountains. There is a Weber 3-burner gas grille. And, perhaps most importantly, there is a 5 person outdoor hot tub that can squeeze more.

Other outdoor features include a cricket lawn and a bocce lawn. there’s also a screened gazebo with rustic furniture.

There is a communal Tennis Court shared with neighbors on our hill, and the amazing Queechy Lake at the bottom of the hill is legendary for it’s clean spring fed water, sand beach and canoe/kayak launch.

Wildlife sightings on the property include: deer, rabbit, fox, coyote, porcupine, turkey, bobcat, groundhog, eagles and too many other birds to name. There are also black bears, though we haven’t seen any. Very important to be extra cautious with any pets running around outside!
